Shamans from all over the world arrive at the event, but there will be only one Shaman King. This makes a lot of enemies, but the weird thing is that it also creates friends. The names of the heroes often are easy to make jokes of and this brings a lot of humor in the anime. Also the lack or too much of seriousness of some of the characters makes the anime even funnier.
